Gino the Pious. Bartali was a two time winner of the Tour de France, 1938 and 1948 – and a three time winner of the Giro d’Italia, 1936, 1937 and 1946. Along with numerous Grand Tour stage victories, classics and stage races. A powerful climber Bartali did his most damage in the mountains winning Mountain stage classifications for many years. During the Second World War, Bartali was allowed to continue training and used this as a cover for his role helping the Resistance and persecuted Jews by smuggling secret documents inside the frame of his bike. In 2013 he was recognized for his war efforts by Yad Vashem and awarded the honor Righteous Among the Nations.
