Content Introduction Pre-Flight: Before You Read The Red Badge of Courage (unabridged) The Charge of the Light Brigade A Quote From: All Quiet on the Western Front World War I Letter Discussion Questions Wrap Up: After You Read A Note About Wrap-Ups An Uninvited Guest Stephen Crane Quotes Additional Reading About Glen Draeger Create Your Own Memes In addition to the unabridged text of Crane’s novel, this volume for students in grades 7-12 includes a “Pre-Flight”, a short introduction to read before reading, a “Wrap-Up”, a more in depth explanation and discussion of the novel, to be read after, along with “An Uninvited Guest”, where Mr. Draeger travels back in time to meet Crane. He meets a lot of other famous authors in the process. Also included are open-ended, Socratic discussion questions to help students think more in depth about the novel. There is also “The Charge of Light Brigade” by Tennyson, a World War I letter from Mr. Draeger’s grandfather and a poignant quote from All Quiet on the Western Front. And, sparing no expense for this series, there is even a photo of Crane and two paintings by Thomas Cole. I know, I know, this kind of attention to detail goes above and beyond. Don’t stop reading yet, though. Also included are memes to help reinforce themes from the novel. These aren’t just typical, run-of-the-mill memes, many of them expose your students to great art in the process. Sometimes there is just great art. And…there are also some do it yourself memes where students fill in their own talk bubbles. I think that’s it. Pay no attention to Crane’s comment above. Writers can be temperamental.
